A: Cake smash sessions are best booked 1-2 months in advance especially if you’d like your photos ready for a first birthday celebration. 

 

Q: What age is best for a cake smash session?

A: Most cake smash sessions take place around your baby’s first birthday, typically when they are 10–11 months old.

Q: Can my 2 year old have a cake smash session?

A: Yes. I can take cake smash photography at any age. Please contact Tyler Bannister Photography to discuss in more detail. 

 

Q: Do you provide the cake for the session?

A: A white 6-inch semi-naked cake with buttercream icing can be provided for an additional cost, providing your baby has no known allergies or intolerances. Otherwise you will be required to bring your own cake.  

 

Q: What kind of cake works best for a cake smash?

A: Simple buttercream cakes with soft icing tend to photograph beautifully and are easiest for babies to explore and smash. Neutral or coordinated colours work best with the overall session styling.

Q: Do you provide outfits for my baby to wear at their cake smash session?

A: Yes. I have a selection of outfits for your baby to wear at the session, or you are welcome to bring your own special outfit.

Q: What should my baby wear for a cake smash session?

A: Outfits should be simple, comfortable, and easy to move in. Rompers, bloomers, knitted outfits, or neutral-toned clothing photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your baby’s expressions.

Q: How many outfit changes should I expect for my baby at the cake smash?

A: I typically do 2 outfit changes for your baby, this provides a good variety of images. Too many outfit changes can upset your baby especially if they do not like being dressed and undressed.

Q: What cake smash background sets do you have?

A: I have a variety of cake smash background sets to choose from. Take a look through my social media pages to see some of the sets I’ve created before.

Q: Can I choose a new theme or different colour palette for the background set?

A: If you have your own ideas or a specific theme in mind, I’m always happy to discuss them and create something new where I can.

Q: How long does a cake smash session last?

A: Most cake smash sessions last between 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, allowing time for portraits before the cake, the cake smash itself, and milk bath (or bubble bath for any dairy allergies) photos afterward.

 

Q: What if my baby doesn’t like the cake?

A: That’s completely normal. Some babies dive straight in while others take their time exploring textures and tastes. Every baby is different. We encourage interaction and capture genuine reactions throughout the session.

Q: Do I need to bring anything to the cake smash session?

A: Yes. I ask that you bring a towel for after the milk bath, some small snacks incase we need to hide them in the cake and a toy that you don't mind being in the photos.

 

Q: Can parents and siblings be included in the session?

A: Absolutely. Parent and sibling photos can be included at the beginning of your cake smash session for a complete first birthday experience. Please let me know when booking that you'd like to be included and have some timeless family portraits captured. This will take around 10-15 minutes of your total session time so not to tired your baby out before the cake. 

 

Q: What happens if my baby has allergies?

A: Please let us know about any allergies, intolerances or dietary requirements before the session. 

 

Q: Do cake smash sessions include milk bath or bubble bath photos?

A: Yes. Milk bath (or bubble bath for any dairy allergies) photos are included.

 

Q: Where do cake smash sessions take place?

A: Cake smash sessions with Tyler Bannister Photography take place in my studio in Coventry. 

 

Q: How soon will we receive our cake smash photos?

A: Your soft-edited newborn preview gallery is delivered within 1 week after your session. Once you have selected your image package and payment has been received, your final gallery will be ready within 2 weeks for download, printing, and sharing.
